(Types of Scales in Geography Practical)

(Verbal Scale / Statement Scale)

---

(Numerical Scale / Representative Fraction – R.F.)

---

(Linear Scale / Graphical Scale)

Meaning and types of scale

---

Meaning of scale

A map is a small model of the actual surface of the earth. It is not possible to show the area spread on the earth in its actual size on paper, so while making a map, the distance is shown in a smaller size.

👉 The process of showing this distance in a smaller or bigger size is called scale.

Definition –

“The ratio between the distance shown on the map and the actual distance on the earth is called geography practical scale.”

Example –

If 1 centimeter on the map = 1 kilometer on the earth, then it means that the scale is 1:100000 (because 1 km = 100000 cm).

 ---

Types of Scales in Geography Practical

Generally three types of scales are used in practical work in Geography –

1. Verbal Scale / Statement Scale

In this, the relation between the distance of the map and the ground is written in words.

For example: “1 cm on the map = 1 km on the ground.”

Feature: Simple and easy to understand.

Disadvantage: If the map is made smaller or bigger, then this scale changes.

---

2. Numerical Scale / Representative Fraction – R.F.

In this, the relation between the map and the actual distance is shown in the form of a ratio.

Form: 1 : n

For example: 1 : 50,000 means – 1 unit distance on the map = 50,000 unit distance on the ground.

The unit can be any (cm, meter etc.)

Feature: Easy to calculate and universal.

Disadvantage: A common man cannot understand it immediately.

---

3. Linear Scale / Graphical Scale

In this, a straight line is drawn and divided into equal parts and the actual distance is marked on each part.

This is a graphical form.

Example: 1 km can be written at every 1 cm by drawing a line.

Feature: This scale remains correct even if the map is small or big.

Disadvantage: It takes more time to make it.

 ---

Brief comparison

Type Form Feature Drawback

Large scale By words (e.g. 1 cm = 1 km) Simple, easily understood Map changes when scaled down or enlarged

Numerical scale (R.F.) Ratio (e.g. 1 : 50,000) Easy to calculate, scientifically complex for a layman

Linear scale Line and segment (Graphical) More effort to make the map correct even if it is scaled down or enlarged

---

✅ Conclusion

Geography Practical scale is the soul of the map, because without it it is impossible to derive the actual ground meaning of the distance on the map.

Therefore, in geography all the three types of scales – verbal, numerical and linear – are used in different situations.
